Verification Methods
DNS verification (Domain properties) - add a TXT record to your domain's DNS configuration. This is the most reliable method and is required for Domain properties. Most Australian hosting providers and registrars (like VentraIP, Crazy Domains, and Synergy Wholesale) support this through their control panels. The record typically propagates within minutes to 48 hours.
HTML tag (URL-prefix only) - add a meta tag to your homepage's HTML head section. Quick and easy, but only works for URL-prefix properties.
HTML file upload - upload a specific HTML file to your site's root directory. Simple but can be lost during site migrations or CMS updates.
Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager - if you already have GA4 or GTM installed, GSC can verify through those existing tags. This is the fastest method if you already use either tool.
Once verified, GSC begins collecting data immediately, but historical data is limited to what Google already has. You will not see data from before the property was created. Average position - the average keyword ranking position across all queries for which your site appeared. A value of 1.0 means you are consistently in the top position. Note that this is an average - a page ranking position 3 for one query and position 15 for another would show an average of 9.
Filtering and Segmenting Data
The real power of Performance reports is in the filters. You can segment data by:
- Query: see which specific search terms drive impressions and clicks
- Page: analyse performance at the individual URL level

- Discovered - currently not indexed: Google knows the page exists but has not crawled it yet. Often a crawl budget issue on larger sites. Ensure the page is linked from other indexed pages and included in your sitemap.
- Excluded by 'noindex' tag: You (or your CMS) have told Google not to index this page. Verify this is intentional - I have found accidental noindex tags on critical service pages more times than I can count.
- Blocked by robots.txt: Your robots.txt file prevents Google from accessing the page. Again, verify this is intentional.
- Redirect: The URL redirects to another page. Normal for migrated content; problematic if important pages are redirecting unexpectedly.

What URL Inspection Shows You
Enter any URL from your verified property and the tool returns:
- Index status: is the page indexed, and when was it last crawled?
- Crawl details: how Google accessed the page, what HTTP response it received, and whether any resources were blocked
- Mobile usability: does the page pass Google's mobile-friendliness test?
- Rich results: does the page have valid structured data, and is it eligible for rich results?
- Referring page and sitemap: how Google discovered this URL
Practical Uses
Diagnosing indexation problems. When a page is not appearing in search results, URL Inspection is the first place I check. It tells you definitively whether the page is indexed and, if not, why.
Validating fixes. After fixing a technical issue on a page, use the "Request Indexing" function to ask Google to re-crawl the URL. This does not guarantee immediate indexing, but it puts the page in the priority crawl queue. Note that Google limits indexing requests - use this for important pages, not bulk re-crawling.
Checking rendered HTML. The "View Crawled Page" feature shows you exactly what Googlebot saw when it crawled the page. - Did impressions drop (visibility loss) or did CTR drop (position changes)?
- Which specific queries were affected?
